Now that the third-generation Porsche Boxster has been announced, predicting its closed-roof variation is almost a no-brainer. This, dear readers, is what we believe the new Cayman should look like. You will remember that this mid-engine coupe was introduced as a derivative of the second-gen Boxster—and that Porsche surprised the industry with the chutzpah to [...]

  • Ford Set to Offer Manual Transmission in Top-Spec Focus Titanium

    Updated: 2012-01-24 19:02:49
The redesigned 2012 Ford Focus is pretty popular here in the C/D office—we awarded it a 2012 10Best honor—and the same goes for manual transmissions. We like what happens when you put the two together, especially since it allows buyers to avoid the less-than-stellar dual-clutch automatic that’s offered in the Focus. The only problem with [...]

  • Kimi admits he'll need time to adjust to F1

    Updated: 2012-01-24 02:39:16
DANICA OFFICIALLY OUT OF INDY 500 Kimi Raikkonen, who's well into Day 2 of his return to Formula One by driving a 2010-spec Renault around the Valencia circuit in Spain, said following Monday’s session that he expects he’ll need a little time to get readjusted. Ya think? The 2007 world champion, who spent two years competing in the World Rally Championship and took a detour to North America in 2011 for a couple of NASCAR races, is now back in F1 with Lotus (which used to be Renault, remember?) and said that while he didn’t have any real trouble driving...

  • Volvo to Split S60 Lineup with T5 AWD Model

    Updated: 2012-01-23 22:58:31
Volvo has added a new, lineup-splitting T5 AWD version of its S60 sedan, one of the brand’s few successful U.S. offerings. John Maloney, Volvo’s new U.S. president, revealed the information during an interview at the Detroit auto show. The T5 AWD announcement is hardly exciting stuff, but in light of recent subtractions from its U.S. [...]

This week’s challenge apparently wasn’t difficult enough—the first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1967 Mazda Cosmo Sport was also the first to post a guess. SBro will receive a Save [...]

A Mazda with a diesel engine finally will arrive in the U.S. in early 2013, spokesman Jeremy Barnes tells us. “It’ll be here between 15 and 18 months behind the launch of the Skyactiv-G gasoline engine in the Mazda 3.” That car hit the market in October of last year, so the math says to [...]

Volkswagen dropped a non-surprise today in the form of the five-door variant of its Up! city car. We’ve pretty thoroughly covered the three-door Up! since its debut at last year’s Frankfurt auto show, including a first-drive report, and found it to offer handsome styling, decent road manners, and excellent fuel economy. This five-door version was [...]

  • Here's how F1 teams get their money

    Updated: 2012-01-23 01:28:27
Of all the motorsport journalists writing for all the motorsport publications in all the world, I trust maybe three or four more than everybody else. Nigel Roebuck is at the top of my list for Formula One. Joe Saward is close behind. Saward was mentored by Roebuck when they both worked at Britain’s Autosport magazine back in the 1980s. He left Autosport to write for F1 News magazine (which is where I became a fan) and when it ceased publication, he went on to write for other motoring magazines and, in recent years, Internet sites. As well as also being...

Considering that French automaker Peugeot hasn’t sold cars in the U.S. for 20 years—and has no immediate plans to return—you’d think the company’s decision to end its participation in big-time endurance sports-car racing, effective immediately, wouldn’t have much impact on the American racing scene. Au contraire: The American Le Mans Series was counting on Peugeot’s [...]

  • 2014 Ford Mondeo Wagon Rendered: We’ll Take It as a Fusion

    Updated: 2012-01-20 15:23:18
Now that the 2013 Ford Fusion‘s sheetmetal has been exposed, one of our illustrators has grafted cargo space onto the back to create a wagon. And a good-looking one at that. Since the new Fusion will be sold in Europe as the Mondeo, this rendering is more relevant to the continent.  But because we’ll never [...]

Here are two big pieces of news concerning the Canadian Motorsports Expo, which will be held at the International Centre out by the airport the weekend of Feb. 10-12. First, NASCAR star Carl Edwards, the guy who finished second to Tony Stewart in last season’s Sprint Cup series, will be at the Expo on Sat., the 11th, between noon and 2 to sign autographs and answer questions from fans. Actually, although he officially finished second in the Chase to the Championship, Edwards was actually tied with Stewart following the final race but lost because Tony had more wins. Having said...

    Updated: 2012-01-19 23:32:48
BMW may be late to the “four-door coupe” party, but the company is devoting considerable effort to catching up with Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Audi. The 6-series Gran Coupe is a slightly different take on the idea: While the Audi A7 and the Mercedes CLS stand on known platforms but have unique bodies and the Panamera [...]

  • The connection between high speeds and hwy. crashes

    Updated: 2012-01-19 16:06:07
Last week, on the Wheels Smackdown feature at wheels.ca (that’s where Mark Richardson and I look at each other and shout: “You’re wrong!”), I argued for the retention of the 100 km/h speed limit on Ontario’s 400-series highways. (I know, I know – what does this have to do with auto racing? Which is what I usually write about? Please, bear with me . . .) I started my argument by saying that if people want to drive really fast, there are places to do it — like in race cars on the road circuit at Mosport International Raceway, or...

    Updated: 2012-01-18 15:50:01
Now we know why Sebastien Bourdais signed to drive a full season in the IZIOD IndyCar Series instead of racing for Peugeot in the European Le Mans series this season, as had been rumoured. In a statement, the French manufacturer said: "This decision has been taken in the context of a difficult economic environment in Europe. Peugeot has chosen to concentrate resources on its sales performance in 2012." A victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2009 was Peugeot's...
